The Greatorex Street synagogue was no longer in use, the building had been squatted, set alight and flooded, and was in very bad repair. Without adding new components, I completely renovated the reception room to stand as a reminder that human intentions, wishes and energies are required to maintain a particular vision of the world. When these are withdrawn, atrophy gives rise to another order of reality that pays little heed to the desires of humans.

Die Synagoge in der Greatorex Street wurde nicht mehr genutzt. Das Gebäude war besetzt, in Brand gesetzt und überflutet worden und befand sich in einem sehr schlechten Zustand. Ohne neue Elemente hinzuzufügen, habe ich den Empfangsraum komplett renoviert. Damit möchte ich daran erinnern, dass menschliche Absichten, Wünsche und Energien erforderlich sind, um eine bestimmte Weltanschauung aufrechtzuerhalten. Werden diese zurückgezogen, entsteht durch Verkümmerung eine andere Realität, die den Wünschen der Menschen wenig Beachtung schenkt.

Before and after shots: renovation work included taking paint chips to local shop to get new paint mixed, washing curtains, taking up, washing and relaying carpet, removing aluminium fixtures and fittings, sanding, polishing and reapplying them, scraping and repainting ceiling, removing mould and repainting walls and doors.
During the opening, one visitor opened the door, looked inside and said “Nothing to see here.”
