AIN’T SHE SWEET..? 2003

When I came to Germany in 1997, I was often told that both I and my figures were ‘sweet’. During a residency in Salzburg in 2003, I decided to make 75 self-portraits from sugar paste and marzipan in the Konditorei Josef Fingerlos. These I installed on two plinths, one on either side of a central table in Zagreus Project. For the opening, I made a performance in which I chose certain figures, chopped them into pieces and offered them to the audience for consumption.
I am allergic to sugar.

Als ich 1997 nach Deutschland kam, wurde mir oft gesagt, dass sowohl ich als auch meine Figuren „süß“ seien. Während eines Aufenthaltes in Salzburg im Jahr 2003 beschloss ich, in der Konditorei Josef Fingerlos 75 Selbstporträts aus Zuckerpaste und Marzipan anzufertigen. Diese installierte ich auf zwei Sockeln, einen auf jeder Seite eines zentralen Tisches im Zagreus-Projekt. Für die Eröffnung machte ich eine Performance, in der ich bestimmte Figuren auswählte, sie in Stücke hackte und dem Publikum zum Verzehr anbot.
Ich bin allergisch gegen Zucker.
