COLLECTOR’S PIECE
in Collections and Reflections

I was one of four artists selected to participate in an Arts Council project investigating the collections and resources of the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection at the SCVA, Norwich and producing a response in a piece of work. Rather than focusing on the physical objects, I focused on the impulse to collect. I recognised some of the symptoms I had researched in myself: ‘The world’s alright now I’ve found this’, until the feeling wears off and the search starts again. I visualised this urge in a non-physical manner through an installation that references the methods of display used in the collection, yet is aesthetically self-contained and fictionalised.

“Heather Allen worked from direct experience, her work grew out of her responses as a viewer, yet viewing her work is quite unlike the meandering experience of looking at art in a gallery. She has re-presented, inverted and subverted the the experience, overlaid with concerns about accumulation, classification, ordering of material and the style and process of display. It has re-classifed and re-contextualised an entire set of experiences and ideas.”

Ich war eine von vier Künstlern, die ausgewählt wurden, um an einem Projekt des Arts Council teilzunehmen. Dabei wurden die Sammlungen und Ressourcen der Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection im SCVA in Norwich untersucht und in einem Kunstwerk verarbeitet. Mein Fokus lag nicht auf den physischen Objekten, sondern auf dem Sammeltrieb. Dabei erkannte ich einige der Symptome, die ich recherchiert hatte, bei mir selbst: „Die Welt (ich) ist in Ordnung, jetzt, wo ich das gefunden habe“, bis das Gefühl nachlässt und die Suche von vorne beginnt. Ich visualisierte den Drang zum Sammeln auf nichtphysische Weise in einer Installation, die Darstellungsmethoden der Sammlung zitiert, ästhetisch jedoch in sich geschlossen und fiktionalisiert ist.
“Heather Allen arbeitete aus direkter Erfahrung heraus. Ihre Arbeit entstand aus ihren Reaktionen als Betrachterin. Doch die Betrachtung ihrer Arbeit unterscheidet sich deutlich von der mäandernden Erfahrung, Kunst in einer Galerie zu betrachten. Sie hat die Erfahrung neu dargestellt, umgekehrt und unterwandert, überlagert von Überlegungen zu Anhäufung, Klassifizierung und Ordnung des Materials sowie dem Stil und Prozess der Präsentation. Sie hat eine ganze Reihe von Erfahrungen und Ideen neu klassifiziert und in einen neuen Kontext gestellt.“
